What You Need To Know

As a commercial property owner, it’s essential to understand the various commercial roofing systems and your options depending on whether you’re constructing a new building or replacing your existing roof. Some structures may even require multiple materials to correctly protect them from the elements or meet building code requirements.

When you work with the commercial roofing specialists at MBR Industrial, we’ll work closely with you or your construction team to ensure you choose the suitable commercial roofing materials for your industrial, commercial or institutional roofing project.

For flat roofing, we specialize in the more technologically advanced, environmentally friendly EPDM and TPO options, but we can provide virtually any type of roofing system depending on your needs. Here are some of the benefits and features of each type.

EPDM Roofing

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane with exceptional durability. A popular option in this type of roof is Firestone’s RubberGard™ family of EPDM roofing systems. Benefits of EPDM roofing include:

  • Extremely long service life, outlasting most other roofing options
  • Quick and easy to install
  • Low maintenance and life cycle costs
  • Good UV resistance
  • Remains flexible even in harsh Canadian winters
  • Fully recyclable, with a lower carbon footprint than other options
  • Also available in reflective white (e.g., RubberGard™EcoWhite EPDM)
  • Up to 30-year warranty available

TPO Roofing

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a reflective (often white) single-ply roof known for its environmental and energy-saving qualities and its economical installation. We feature Firestone’s UltraPly™ family of TPO roofing systems. Benefits of TPO include:

  • Flexible and durable
  • Resistant to punctures, tearing, ozone damage and algae growth
  • Heat-welded seams for long-lasting performance
  • Easy to install
  • Environmentally friendly and recyclable
  • A “cool roof” that can reduce air conditioning costs
  • Up to 30-year warranty available

As the slope of your roof increases, the use of the more technically advanced flat and low-slope commercial roofing materials becomes ineffective. While these materials are generally seen on residential properties, any commercial roof with a  slope of 3:12 or higher requires the use of more traditional roofing materials like asphalt shingles, metal roofing and cedar shake or shingles.

Commercial Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is an increasingly popular option with many benefits, including:

  • Extreme durability (will outlast most other roofing options)
  • High wind resistance
  • Energy efficiency
  • Environmentally friendly and recyclable
  • Steel panels can be installed over an existing roof (saving the time and cost of a roofing tear-off)
  • Comes in a wide range of styles and colours
  • We custom manufacture the metal flashings for each individual building, resulting in a well-trimmed, better protected roof

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are a longstanding favourite and an economical choice for sloped roofs, with a wide range of colours and styles available.

As a certified GAF Weather Stopper Roofing Contractor, we find that the GAF Timberline HD shingles offer a great combination of superior aesthetics, value and warranty protection. Other high-quality asphalt shingle roofing options include BP, Owens Corning and CertainTeed.

Cedar Shake & Shingles

Cedar shakes and shingles are a great way to complement the charm and elegance of historic and architecturally distinct buildings. In addition to its natural beauty and character appeal, cedar has several functional advantages, including natural insulation properties, resistance to decay, fire, wind and harsh weather, and a long lifespan (up to 30-50 years).

We ensure quality in our cedar installations using only Certi-Label shakes and shingles manufactured by the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau (CSSB) members. We also follow the CSSB’s well-established installation guidelines and maintain the highest level of craftsmanship in every detail.
